Inauguration of Switzerland’s biggest data centre

18.05.2017 - Safe Host inaugurated its Gland data centre on 18th May 2017

Switzerland & French-speaking Switzerland’s principal provider of data hosting services has opened Switzerland’s biggest data centre to date.

At the inaugurating event on 18th May 2017, some 800 curious attendees gathered to admire the grandeur of Safe Host’s new data centre. A colossal 14,400 square meters, the Gland data centre is Switzerland’s largest state-of-the art, carrier neutral colocation facility. Located in the heart of Europe, the site complements Safe Host’s Geneva and Avenches facilities, providing data hosting services to major multinationals since 2002.

This consequential launch attracted a plethora of journalists from numerous newspapers such as Le Temps, la Tribune de Genève, ICT Journal, 24H, l’Agefi, La Liberté, le Bilan, and many more.

The data centre denominated SH2 has a colocation facility of 14,400 sq. m with 40 MVA dual power feeds in order to meet the growing demand for companies to host their systems in Switzerland, where they benefit from the country’s abundant hydropower and its strong legal framework supporting data protection. All major telecom operators are present on site, providing low latency as well as local and international access. Storage space will be deployed in 2000 sq. m phases every 18 months.

During the event, Safe Host was pleased to welcome multiple officials including Mr. Gerald Cretegny, Mayor of Gland, as well as Mr. Fathi Derder, National Councillor and member of the Science and Education Committee, giving speeches on the innovative impact that the ultra-secure SH2 will have on the area and in Switzerland as a whole. The State Counsellor of the Canton of Vaud – Mr. Phillipe Leuba – closed the inauguration speeches.

Attendees had the opportunity of visiting server rooms through a virtual reality immersion into the heart of the data centre, as well as real life visits in the data centre’s basement that houses water tanks, generators and refrigeration units for energy optimisation. According to ICT Journal’s Yannick Chavanne, this was ‘a well-designed demo that was met with much success amongst the guests’.
